Whether your storage unit is a long-term or short-term solution, it is always helpful to have it organized and easily accessible. If someone is helping you pack or move, it can make their job easier, and when it is time to access the items from storage, it makes your life easier. Here are some tips for creating an easy inventory for your items in the unit.
Go through the boxes in your storage unit. Number each box and write down what is in it. Then group them together with boxes of similar items or those that belong in a room. For example, if you have a box of common bedside items—such as an alarm clock, spare reading glasses, a journal and pen, hand lotion, and a small lamp—label the box #1, jot down the items inside, and place it next to other bedroom boxes in your storage unit.
You could also do a color coding system between rooms if you decide that would work for you. You could have boxes of kitchen items stapled with blue paper on the top or one side, and so on.
On either a different paper list or an electronic file, keep track of every box number, label, and general idea of the contents. For example, on the master list, you will have box #1 in one column and on the adjacent column "nightstand items." Then mark which bedroom it will belong to, such as "master bedroom" or "guest bedroom."
If you are doing the color coding system, you can highlight the columns in the color of the room where they belong. Just make sure that you update the list as you add or subtract items within the unit.
Creating a visual representation of your storage unit can eliminate guess work. Draw a diagram of your space as it is organized and draw and label your items within them. Use a key also, labeling that an asterisk means frequently used items or an ampersand is for seasonal items that you may need. Therefore, if you are loaning a friend your lawnmower that is in your unit, they will know that it will be under the part of your diagram labeled with an ampersand. If you are using the color coding system, you can draw your diagram with colors such as blue for kitchen and green for garden or outdoors. That way your friend could easily find green markers within the diagram and the space to indicate where the lawnmower will be.
